Feeling like another planet - Algar Seco

If you rent a car in Algarve, make sure to visit Algar Seco, which is an amazing rock formation near Carvoeiro. Walking between these rocks will make you feel like you are on another planet. The tiny caves, holes and rock pillars, natural pools filled by the high tide, glimmering in green from the color of soft algae, the shells trapped in the rocks since thousands or even millions of years... like an archaeological excavation.

The rocks and caves are connected by stairs, so almost everything is easily accessible, even for children. But be careful, because the rocks are very slippery sometimes and there are no handrails here! Choose right shoes for this walk - I know, I'm always talking about the right shoes, but we did this walk in slippers AGAIN, so sometimes I rather climbed barefoot on the rocks because it was still easier and probably safer than in flipflops :D It was so great to spend a couple of hours there as you can find fantastic photo spots in Algar Seco, or you can just sit down and chill in the sunshine, next to the water.

According to a local legend, hundreds of years ago, a princess named Alfanzina lived there. She fell in love with a poor sailor from a coaler ship (a carvoeiro). The young lovers met secretly among the cliffs of Algar Seco because they were afraid of the princess' father. Eventually, the king found out and became very angry because he didn't want his daughter to fell in love with a commoner. He followed the couple one night and killed the young man, whose dead body fell right into the ocean. Alfanzina mourned her love and cried so hard that her teardrops formed tiny holes into the rocks. So sad but beautiful story, isn't it? Just like every legend.

I recommend you two restaurants in Carvoeiro:

• Primavera: this place is about 200 meters from the Algar Seco parking lot. They have very tasty pizzas and their pasta dishes are also good - the creamy penne with salmon and cherry tomatoes is heavenly for example.
• Boneca Bar: this cozy place is located right between the cliffs of Algar Seco. We didn't try their main courses since we weren't hungry, and we just ordered two drinks and some appetizers. We had delicious local cheese, fresh bread, spicy butter, sardine paté, pickled carrots (yes, carrots, with a bit of a Roman cumin!), olives and tomato salsa... just for a few euros. Give them a try if you are here!  

Ha autót béreltek Algarvéban, semmiképp se hagyjátok ki az Algar Seco nevű csodás sziklaképződményt, Carvoeiro közelében. Itt sétálva szinte egy másik bolygón érzed magad. A rengeteg apró kis barlang, vájat és sziklaoszlop, dagály idején megtelő apró, természetes medencék, amiket zöldre fest a puha alga, és több ezer, sőt talán több millió éve a kövekbe zárt kagylók azt az érzetet keltik, mintha egy régészeti feltáráson lennél.

Az egész hely teljesen ki van építve, lépcsőn minden látnivaló kényelmesen megközelíthető, akár gyerekeknek is - de vigyázat, néhol elég csúszósak a sziklák. Megfelelő cipőben induljatok el! Ezt nem győzöm hangsúlyozni, mi megint papucsban vágtunk neki ennek is, úgyhogy a nehezebb szakaszokon mezítláb másztam inkább a köveken, mert még úgy is biztonságosabb volt, mint az 500 forintos kis strandpapucsomban. Remekül el lehet tölteni itt pár órát, hiszen annyi szép kis szeglete van az Algar Secónak, ahol fotózni lehet, vagy egyszerűen csak pihenni, és bámulni ki a vízre. 

Egy érdekes legenda is kapcsolódik egyébként ehhez a különleges helyhez. Eszerint egy hercegnő, akit Alfanzinának hívtak, szerelmes lett egy szénszállító hajón dolgozó szegény matrózba. A fiatal szerelmesek titokban találkoztak, Algar Seco sziklái között, félve a király haragjától. Végül a hercegnő apja mégis tudomást szerzett a titkos randevúkról, és nagyon dühös lett, amiért a lánya egy egyszerű közemberrel került kapcsolatba. Követte őket, megölte a fiút, akinek a holtteste a tengerbe zuhant, a hercegnő pedig szerelmét gyászolva sírva fakadt. A legenda szerint az ő könnycseppjei formálták a sziklák felszínét ilyen lyukacsosra. Szomorú, mégis szép történet, nem igaz? Akár a legtöbb legenda.

Két éttermet is ajánlok nektek Carvoeiróban:

• Primavera: az Algar Seco parkolótól picit visszafelé kell sétálni ehhez a helyhez. Nagyon ízletesek a pizzák és a tésztaételeik is mennyeiek - a lazacos tejszínes penne például!
• Boneca Bar: ezt a hangulatos helyet közvetlenül az Algar Secónál találjátok, a sziklák között. A főételeket nem próbáltuk ki, csak egy italt rendeltünk, és előételeket, mert nem voltunk nagyon éhesek. Ha erre jártok, mindenképp kóstoljátok meg ezeket is a főételek mellett: isteni finom, helyi sajtot, friss kenyeret, fűszeres vajkrémet, szardíniapástétomot, savanyított répát (igen, répát, nagyon finom!), olívabogyót és paradicsomos salsát is kaptok, mindössze pár euróért. Mi imádtuk!
