Top 10 things to do in Algarve, Portugal

As I promised before I tried to choose those 10 things you should try if you are travelling to the Algarve region. These tips reflects only my own experiences and opinion of course - as every person, every journey is different. But I'll be still glad if you'll only find 1 or 2 ideas from this article useful. And if you've been in Algarve before, don't forget to write your tips and recommendations in the comment section for other travelers! :)

Ahogy ígértem, igyekeztem összeszedni azt a 10 dolgot, amit szerintem nem érdemes kihagyni, ha Lagosban jártok. Fontos leszögeznem, hogy ez csak a saját élményeimet és véleményemet tükrözi, nem kell mindenkinek ugyanezt az utat járnia. De szerintem már az is szuper, ha csak 1-2 ötletet tudtok meríteni ebből a cikkből! Ha pedig jártatok már itt, írjátok meg kommentben, ti mit ajánlanátok az ide utazók számára :)

1. Explore the Benagil caves with kayak

I remember the first time I saw a photo of the Benagil caves I fell in love with Algarve. I immediately knew that I need to see this cave once, walk on its soft sand and listen to the waves of the ocean. In Benagil there is not just one big cave but several tiny ones too. There are many guided boat tours to choose from: 20-minute quick visit or longer cruises along the coast where you can take a glimpse of dozens of small caves. But I would never choose these tours. While we were in the big cave, we witnessed the 'visits' of several boats and I watched videos from these tours before... somehow they are not for me. On a tour like this, the ship goes into the cave for a brief moment, everybody has about 2 minutes to take a photo of the cave before they go out. And that's it. And in my opinion the cave is far more beautiful from the inside, looking at the ocean. You should go inside and not just stop at the 'entrance hall'... Sometimes these boat tours are even more expensive than an almost one-hour kayak rental. Of course, not everyone can or loves to kayak - but if you do, do not hesitate to choose this way to explore the Benagil cave. Fedezd fel a Benagil barlangot - kajakkal! Emlékszem, hogy konkrétan egy Benagil-barlangról készült fotót látva szerettem bele Algarvéba. Már akkor tudtam, hogy nekem ezt a barlangot egyszer látnom kell, egyszer itt kell sétálnom a puha homokban a tenger hullámait hallgatva. Részben Benagil miatt döntöttünk úgy, hogy az első portugál utunkat erre a partvidékre szervezzük. Benagil környékén egyébként nem csak ez az egy barlang van, hanem sok apró, pici, eldugott kis zug. Rengeteg szervezett túra közül lehet itt választani: van, amelyik 20 perces villámvizitre visz, és van olyan is, amelyik több mint egy óra alatt tucatnyi apró barlangba kalauzol. De én soha nem választottam volna ezeket a túrákat. Míg a barlangban voltunk, szemtanúi is voltunk pár kirándulóhajó látogatásának és videókat is néztem ezekről a túrákról még itthon... valahogy nem nekem való. A hajó betolat a barlangba, majd kitolat, azalatt a kb. 1 perc alatt, amíg teljesen bent van, mindenki tolong, hogy le tudja fényképezni a barlangot, és már mennek is tovább. Ráadásul a barlang nem is befelé, hanem kifelé tekintve a leggyönyörűbb. Egyszerűen megérdemli, hogy kiszállj a partján, és egyedül legyél ott. Halkan megjegyzem, hogy ezek a hajótúrák általában drágábbak is, mint egy egyórás kajakbérlés. Persze nem mindenki tud, szeret vagy mer kajakba ülni - de ha te igen, akkor ne is habozz, mindenképp a kajakot válaszd. 2. Go chase waterfalls!

In Algarve you don't have to stay close to the ocean to enjoy a refreshing swim - several hidden waterfalls are waiting for you! We visited two of them: Cascata Queda do Vigário and Pego do Inferno. To explore these natural wonders you'll need to rent a car because it's almost impossible to reach them with public transport. Good news that you can rent a car at Luzcar for 30-40 euros per day - if you are traveling with your friends it's even cheaper than public transport. Keress eldugott vízeséseket! Algarvéban nem kell az óceánparton maradni ahhoz, hogy csobbanj egy jót - több rejtett vízesés is várja, hogy felfedezd! Mi kettőt vettünk célba: a Cascata do Vigariót és a Pego do Infernót. Előre szólok, hogy ezekhez a csodákhoz sajnos autót kell bérelni, mert tömegközlekedéssel szinte lehetetlen elérni őket. Jó hír viszont, hogy a Luzcarnál már napi 30-40 €-ért bérelhettek autót, amit ha többfelé dobtok, olcsóbban is jöttök ki, mintha busszal vágnátok neki a portugál tájnak. 3. Ponta da Piedade, Lagos

This is a breathtaking rock formation in the western part of Lagos. Make sure to come there at least once. At sunset, everything has a special lilac colour but I guess that the sunrise is even more beautiful from there (unfortunately we were to lazy to wake up early...) There are plenty of boat excursions and kayak tours to Ponta da Piedade. You can find small booths in the harbour of Lagos and along the beach promenade where you can book these excursions.

A Ponta da Piedade egy csodás sziklaegyüttes Lagos "csücskénél". Mindenképp érdemes legalább egyszer eljönni ide. Napnyugtakor különleges, lilás fényben tündököl az egész, de úgy sejtem, a napfelkelte az, ami igazán gyönyörű. Mi sajnos lusták voltunk felkelni, és ezt nagyon bánom! :D Rengeteg kajaktúra és hajókirándulás is indul egyébként ide, érdemes valamelyikre befizetni. Na és hol lehet jelentkezni ezekre a kirándulásokra? Szinte egymást érik a standok a kikötőben és a tengerparti, pálmafákkal szegélyezett sétányokon, úgyhogy egyszerűen nem lehet nem észrevenni őket.

4. Try some local delicacies

This little desserts on the photo above is called Pasteis de nata - look for the name in cafes and confectioneries. It's simple, but perfect: pudding in a kind of puff pastry/butter dough, with a caramelized top. You should always check out the market where you can buy local products, or ask for a taste. If you love fish dishes then order freshly caught, fried fish in a restaurant - at some places you can even choose yourself, which fish you want on your plate. Oh and make sure to order appetizers too! They'll give you a large selection of local delicacies: delicious cheeses, tomato salsa, Portuguese sardine paté, fresh bread, olives, and (surprisingly) pickled carrots with Roman cumin! It was unusual for us, but we loved it!

Kóstold meg a helyi finomságokat! Ezt a képen látható finomságot semmiképp se hagyd ki! Pasteis de nata néven keresd a kávézókban vagy a cukrászdákban. Nem túl bonyolult édesség, viszont annál finomabb: leveles/vajas tésztában sült puding, a tetején picit karamellizálva. De a helyi piacon is érdemes körbejárnod, ahol helyi termékeket vásárolhatsz és kóstolhatsz. Ha pedig szereted a halételeket, akkor feltétlenül rendelj ebédre vagy vacsorára a helyben fogott halakból! Sok étteremben te választhatod ki, hogy melyiket süssék meg neked. Amire pedig még biztatnálak: legalább egyszer rendelj előételeket is: ilyenkor ugyanis csupa helyi finomságot pakolnak eléd: ízletes sajtot, paradicsomos szószt, portugál halpástétomokat, olívabogyót, friss kenyeret, és amin nagyon meglepődtünk, de úgy tűnik, itt nagyon népszerű: savanyított répát római köménnyel. Meglepő, de nagyon finom!

5. Explore the beaches of Lagos

You can choose from several cool beaches in Lagos. Each one is beautiful in its own way but in my opinion the farther you go from the city center the more dramatic are the beaches. We tried all the big beaches in Lagos, from the Marina to the Ponta da Piedade:

• Praia da Batata: or Potato Beach (what a funny name!) is a flatter, sandy beach, ideal for families. There is no natural shade there so it's worth to take a sun umbrella with you. In windy weather, especially in the pre-season this beach can be rather cool compared to those other beaches which are surrounded by tall cliffs. There is a restaurant nearby, and a small (and expensive) shop where you can buy water, beer or icecream.
• Praia dos Estudantes: you can easily walk here from Praia da Batata and vice cersa. This was one of our favourite beaches because it's close to MAR Restaurante & Bar where we had lunch a few times. The rock formations are beautiful here but be careful because there are plenty of shells in the sand and they can hurt your feet easily. This beach is not windy and the rocks even provide natural shade from the late afternoon. 
• Praia do Pinhão: it's a beautiful beach with special, orange coloured sand. It's a bit far from any restaurants or shops so you may have to bring water and food with you, if you want to spend the whole day here. The cliffs give a natural shadow from late morning, so you don't need a sun umbrella. 
• Praia Dona Ana: it is a large, long beach surrounded by breathtaking cliffs. There is a path on the top of the cliffs from Praia do Pinhão. The view is really beautiful up there but be sure to wear the right shoes (we went in flip flops and it was not easy...) There is a beach bar here where you can also rent sunshades and 2 deckchairs for 10€.
• Praia do Camilo: it's really far from the city center but it's worth to walk there because (in my opinion) it's the most beautiful from all the beaches of Lagos. It's relatively small though so it's worth coming early because it can get really crowded especially in the high season. It's also worth to take a sun umbrella with you. There is only one restaurant nearby which can get really crowded too. You have to wait until you are seated, sometimes even 20-30 minutes. If you don't want to queue, arrive early or bring your own lunch to the beach. 

Fedezd fel Lagos strandjait! Lagosban több strand közül is választhattok. Mindegyik gyönyörű a maga módján, de véleményem szerint minél messzebb mentek a központtól, annál drámaibb szépségű lesz a partszakasz. Mi az összes nagyobb strandot kipróbáltuk, a kikötőtől a Ponta da Piedadéig haladva: 

• Praia da Batata: vagy magyarul Burgonya Part (olyan vicces neve van!) egy laposabb partszakasz, puha homokkal, családoknak ideális. Természetes árnyék nem igazán van, ezért érdemes napernyőt vinni. Szeles időben hűvösebb lehet ezen a parton, mint a sziklák által közrefogott kisebb strandokon. A közelben van étterem és egy (drága) kisbolt is. 
• Praia dos Estudantes: a sziklákba vájt járatokon keresztül könnyedén át lehet sétálni a Praia da Batatáról erre a partra, és fordítva. Nekünk az egyik kedvencünk lett, mert elég volt a lépcsőn felmenni és a kedvenc éttermünkhöz jutottunk (MAR restaurant). Gyönyörűek errefelé a sziklák, de érdemes vigyázni, hova lépünk, mert rengeteg a kagyló a homokban, elég szúrós tud lenni. Szélvédett part, késő délután a sziklák természetes árnyékot adnak.
• Praia do Pinhão: különleges strand, a többi partra nem igazán jellemző narancssárgás homokkal. Lépcsőn lehet ide lejutni, kicsit messze van bármilyen étteremtől vagy bolttól, így érdemes vinni magunkkal vizet és ennivalót, ha az egész napot itt akarjuk tölteni. A sziklák már kora délelőtt természetes árnyékot adnak.
• Praia Dona Ana: viszonylag hosszú partszakasz, csodás sziklákkal határolva. A Praia do Pinhãótól fent a sziklák mentén el lehet sétálni ide. Picit nehézkes a terep így ne strandpapucsban induljatok el, hanem egy strapabíró cipőben (mi papucsban mentünk, nem volt egyszerű). Itt napernyőt és nyugágyakat is bérelhettek a beach barnál 10€-ért. 
• Praia do Camilo: nagyon messze van, de megéri elsétálni ide, mert szerintem ez a part a leggyönyörűbb az összes közül. Viszonylag kicsi, így érdemes korán érkezni, főleg főszezonban. Napernyőt is érdemes vinni. Csak egy étterem van a közelben, így ebédidőben elég nagy a tömeg. Várni kell, míg leültetnek egy asztalnál, így előfordul hogy akár 20-30 percet is sorban kell állni. Ha ezt el szeretnétek kerülni, hozzatok magatokkal enni- és innivalót, vagy ebédeljetek nagyon korán!

6. Go on a surf safari

I'm awkwardly terrible at every sport, yet I really wanted to learn (or at least try) to surf. Of course I didn't expect surfing to be as simple and easy as it seems in videos - but little did I know that it's way more difficult than I imagined! :D There are three simple steps you have to learn to be able to stand on your surfboards but by the end of the day I was still struggling with step 2. Maybe because I didn't have the skills, but it's more likely that I wasn't brave enough. Viktor, on the other hand was a quick learner (he is great in every sport, really, I don't know what's his trick). If you spend your holiday in Lagos and want to take surf lessons, I would recommend you to contact Lagos Surf Center. We chose the 1 day surf safari which costs 55 € per person in pre-season (it's a bit more expensive in high season, between June and August). It's not the cheapest freetime activity I know, but it was a full day program and everything was included in the price: transfer to the breathtaking west coast near Aljezur, wetsuit and surfboard, two hours surfing lesson, supervised surfing and continuous help, and a light lunch of course (sandwich, fruits, cereal bar). Vegyél szörfleckéket! Minden sportágban rettenetesen béna vagyok, ennek ellenére nagyon szerettem volna megtanulni, vagy legalábbis kipróbálni a szörfözést. Sejtettem persze, hogy nem olyan egyszerű, mint ahogyan azt videókon láttam, viszont azt sem gondoltam, hogy ilyen nehéz lesz! Három lépés kell ahhoz, hogy fel tudj állni a szörfdeszkán, én viszont (részben ügyetlenség, részben a bátorság hiánya miatt) még nap végén is maximum a 2. lépés elejéig jutottam el. Viktor viszont nagyon hamar beletanult! Ha ti is Lagosba utaztok, és szívesen vennétek szörfleckéket, akkor ajánlom, hogy menjetek el a Lagos Surf Centerbe. Mi egynapos szörf szafarit választottunk, ami előszezonban 55€-ba kerül fejenként. Ez elég borsos árnak tűnik, viszont tényleg egész napos program, és az árban minden benne van: transzfer az álomszép nyugati partra, Aljezur környékére; a wetsuit és a szörfdeszka bérlése, kétszer egy órás szörflecke plusz felügyelet mellett végzett gyakorlás, és egy könnyű ebéd is. 7. Have a sunset drink on a rooftop

We were lucky enough to have an amazing rooftop terrace at our hotel, with incredible views of the surrounding area. There is no better way to end your day in Lagos than sit on a rooftop, enjoy the sunset shades and sip on your favourite drink. Fortunately it's easy to find a rooftop bar or restaurant here - I can recommend Bon Vivant bar for example, which is in the center of Lagos.

Nézd meg a naplementét egy tetőteraszról, a kedvenc italod mellett! Nekünk szerencsénk volt, mert a hotelünk eleve rendelkezett tetőterasszal, ahonnan hihetetlen kilátás nyílt a környékre. Lagosban nem is lehet jobban zárni egy napot, mint gyönyörködni a naplemente fényeiben a magasból, a kedvenc italodat szürcsölve. Szerencsére nem nehéz tetőterasszal rendelkező éttermet vagy bárt találnod, hiszen nagyjából minden épületnek van, de ha egy igazán hangulatos helyet keresel, akkor a Bon Vivant nevűt ajánlom, Lagos központjában.

8. Enjoy the sunshine at Praia da Marinha

This beach was one of our favourites outside Lagos! It's close both to Benagil beach and Algar Seco so you can easily visit all the three places in one day without hurrying. Soft, bright coloured sand, dramatic cliffs around the beach, slowly deepening water - it's ideal for families with children as well. Parking is free, and before heading down to the beach on the stairs nearby, take a walk above the cliffs near the parking lot and admire the scenic view! There is a smaller beach bar/restaurant next to the beach where you can eat some fast food (burgers, hotdogs etc.), or buy an icecream or a drink. The rocks provide natural shade only from the late afternoon, so it's recommended to take a sunshade with you.

Praia da Marinha: Az egyik kedvenc partunk volt Lagoson kívül! Közel van Benagilhez és Algar Secóhoz egyaránt, így egy napra könnyedén beidőzíthetitek mindhárom helyet, rohanás nélkül. Gyönyörű, világos, puha homok, drámai szépségű sziklafalak, lassan mélyülő víz jellemzi ezt a partszakaszt, így családok számára is ideális. Parkolni ingyenesen lehet, és érdemes először fent körbejárni a korlát mentén, gyönyörködni a kilátásban. A partra lépcsőn tudtok lejutni, és van itt egy kisebb beach bar/étterem is, ahol gyorsételeket, jégkrémet és innivalót tudtok venni. A sziklák csak késő délutántól adnak természetes árnyékot, így ha nagy a forróság, érdemes napernyőt vinned magaddal!

9. Take a walk at Algar Seco

If you rent a car in Algarve, make sure to visit Algar Seco, which is an amazing rock formation near Carvoeiro. Walking between these rocks will make you feel like you are on another planet. The tiny caves, grooves, holes and rock pillars, natural pools filled by the high tide glimmering in green from the color of soft algae, the shells trapped in the rocks since thousands or even millions of years... like an archeological excavation. Sétálj egyet Algar Secóban! Ha autót béreltek Algarvében, semmiképp se hagyjátok ki az Algar Seco nevű csodás sziklaképződményt, Carvoeiro közelében. Itt sétálva szinte egy másik bolygón érzed magad. A rengeteg apró kis barlang, vájat és sziklaoszlop, dagály idején megtelő apró, természetes medencék, amiket zöldre fest a puha alga, és több ezer, sőt talán több millió éve a kövekbe zárt kagylók azt az érzetet keltik, mintha egy régészeti feltáráson lennél. 10. Catch a sunrise

Unfortunately I haven't got any photo of the sunrise since I couldn't check this point off my list. We were extremely unlucky with sunrises in Lagos. On our first morning we woke up too late because we arrived late night and were extremely tired. Then I set my alarm for 6 am every morning - but the sky was too grey and cloudy, and we had no sunshine until about 10 am. Last morning of course we had brilliant sunshine but then I want back to sleep again because we had 20 hours of travel ahead of us... If you can catch a sunrise while you are here - send me a photo of it! :D

Nézz meg egy napkeltét! Ehhez a ponthoz sajnos nincs fényképem, mert elképesztő szerencsétlenek voltunk napfelkelte terén. Első reggel későn ébredtünk, hiszen hullafáradtak voltunk a hosszú út után. Utána minden egyes reggel beállítottam az ébresztőmet 6-ra, hogy mire felkel a nap fél 7 körül, még le tudjunk szaladni a partra - de ezeken a reggeleken szörnyen borult, felhős egünk volt, kb. nulla napfelkeltével. Utolsó reggel már nem is állítottam ébresztőt, magamtól keltem fel, természetesen ragyogó napsütésre, de akkor meg már inkább visszafeküdtem aludni... Ha tehetitek, kapjatok el egy napfelkeltét, míg itt vagytok - és küldjetek nekem képet róla! :D
