What to see and do in Gozo?

If you have read my previous post then you know that I didn't fall in love with Malta and I left the main island with mixed feelings - I would probably not go back to Malta again. Gozo, on the other hand was completely different! This tiny island is just as idyllic as Malta had to be 4-5 years ago. Although I'm afraid, tourism will ruin Gozo too, I can only recommend visiting this beautiful part of the Maltese islands. Escape the crowds of the main island and head straight to Gozo!

Unfortunately we only spent one day on the island of Gozo. We should have spent at least 3 or 4 days here, if not more since this small island is much calmer, quieter, and in my opinion it's even more diverse and beautiful than the main island. Getting there is quite easy with the ferries operated by the Gozo Channel lines. Ferries are departing basically in every 30 minutes during high season from the port of Cirkewwa (find the daily timetable here) and the journey takes no more than 25 minutes.

We wanted to explore Gozo by car since we only had a day here so we had to buy a combined ferry ticket: for a vehicle, a driver and a passenger we paid a total of €20.35 for a roundtrip. Note that you don't pay at the time of departure from Malta but when you leave Gozo on the way back. Here you have to go through a small toll gate after you arrive to the ferry terminal where you can pay for your ticket. It's worth to prepare the exact amount of money in cash. If you want to vitis Gozo without car (or you are planning to rent a car on the island), you only need to buy a standard passenger ticket which costs €4.65. 

It's worth spending a few days in Gozo and explore its varied coastline, not to mention the Azure Window Memorial, the breathtaking cliffs of the southern shore and the historic center of the capital, Victoria, and the many more charming old towns. I'm so upset that we didn't have time for Victoria. In fact, we didn't see half as many things as we wanted to and still, our day in Gozo was a bit hectic. I make this mistake from time to time. I want to see everything and that's why I don't have enough time to slow down and just enjoy the moment at each spots. I was driven by the fear that we probably won't come back ever again so I wanted to squeeze in as much things into our 1-day trip as I could. In this post I'll show you the places we explored during our short time in Gozo but please, consider spending AT LEAST 3 DAYS on this beautiful island and do not make the same mistake I did. 

Ha olvastátok az előző bejegyzésemet, akkor biztosan tudjátok, hogy Máltával kapcsolatban eléggé vegyesek az érzéseim - valószínűleg nem térnék ide vissza még egyszer. Gozo viszont teljesen elvarázsolt! Ez az apró sziget épp olyan idilli, mint amilyen a beszámolók alapján Málta lehetett, 4-5 évvel ezelőtt. És bár félek, hogy a turizmus Gozót is tönkre fogja tenni, én mégis szívből javaslom, hogy a máltai utatok nagy részét itt töltsétek, ha nem kértek abból a tömegnyomorból, ami a nagy szigetet jellemzi.

Sajnos mi csak egyetlen egy napot töltöttünk Gozón, amit azóta is bánok. Az egyhetes utunknak legalább a felét erre a kis szigetre kellett volna áldoznunk, mert sokkal nyugodtabb, csendesebb és szerintem változatosabb is, mint a nagy sziget. Eljutni ide meglehetősen könnyű, hiszen a Gozo Channel kompjáratai főszezonban gyakorlatilag félóránként indulnak Cirkewwából (az aktuális napi menetrendet ide kattintva érhetitek el), a menetidő pedig nem több, mint 25 perc. 

Mi autóval mentünk át Gozóra is, így a jármű + sofőr + egy utas kombinációért összesen 20.35€-t fizettünk. A jegyet nem induláskor kellett megvennünk, hanem visszafelé, Gozo elhagyásakor. Itt egy kis fizetőkapun kell áthaladni, amikor a terminálba érsz, ahol meg tudod venni a jegyedet. Érdemes készpénzben előkészíteni a pontos összeget. Ha autó nélkül mennétek át Gozóra, akkor a standard utas retúrjegyet kell megvennetek, ami 4.65€. Sajnos bevallom, ezt nem tudom, hogy előre, vagy szintén visszainduláskor kell-e megváltani, de a terminálban készségesen segítenek. 

Gozóra érdemes több napot szánni, hiszen egészen változatos partjai vannak, nem is beszélve az Azúr Ablak emlékműről, a déli partszakasz lélegzetelállító sziklafalairól, na meg a főváros, Victoria történelmi központjáról - amire legnagyobb sajnálatomra nem jutott időnk. Sőt tulajdonképpen feleannyi dolgot sem néztünk meg, mint amit érdemes lett volna, és még így is azt érzem, túl sok mindent próbáltam bezsúfolni az itt töltött egy napunkba. Rég nem estem már ebbe a hibába, de hát lassan tanul az ember. Szóval nagyon sok szép helyet láttunk Gozón, mégis az egész napos rohanás miatt egyiket sem volt alkalmunk maximálisan kiélvezni, ami teljes egészében az én hibám, de valahogy az a félelem hajtott, hogy tudtam, nem valószínű, hogy még egyszer visszatérünk ide. Röviden írok azokról a helyekről, amiket végiglátogattunk Gozo szigetén - de kérlek titeket, hogy ha ti is ide utaznátok, legalább 3 napot szánjatok erre a szigetre, és ne kövessétek el azt a hibát, amit én. 

Azure Window Memorial

I guess I don't have to introduce the Azure Window to anyone - this monumental limestone arch has been a symbol of not only Gozo but the whole country for many years. It has been a movie scene several times: the Dothraki wedding in GOT was shot here too. On March 8th 2017, after a huge storm the Azure Window collapsed. Although everyone was expecting this, it somehow shocked me. I know it sounds funny and childish but I cried that morning for the Azure Window. And not just for the Azure Window but for the missed opportunity. That I will never see it in my life. That morning I mourned all the beautiful places in the world that I'll never have to chance to see. There isn't enough time to explore everything you want before you die. Human life is simply not enough. So for me, the collapsed Azure Window is a symbol of these lost places and unfulfilled dreams and that's why I wanted to visit the place where it stood once. Although there is not much to see there now that the 'main attraction' disappeared, there is a famous dive site here called the Blue Hole where divers are constantly disappearing and popping up on the surface. This place is actually an underwater cave with no roof and they say that the light are magical under the water - not to mention the sea life!

Azúr Ablak emlékmű

Azt hiszem, senkinek sem kell bemutatnom az Azúr Ablakot - ez a monumentális mészkő boltív nemcsak Gozo, hanem az egész ország jelképe volt hosszú éveken át, és ennek az előterében forgatták például Khal Drogo és Daenarys esküvőjét a Trónok Harcában. 2017. március 8-án egy óriási vihar következtében az Azúr Ablak leomlott. Bár számítani lehetett erre, valahogy engem mégis sokkolt, és bár röhejes, és iszonyat gyerekesen hangzik, én bizony megsirattam az Azúr Ablakot. Vagyis jobban mondva az elszalasztott lehetőséget, hogy már soha nem láthatom. És megsirattam mindazt a szépet, amit valószínűleg ugyanígy soha nem lesz majd alkalmam látni a világban, hiszen egy emberöltő kevés ahhoz, hogy mindent megnézz, amit szeretnél. Szóval az Azúr Ablak számomra ezeknek a soha nem látott, idő előtt elpusztult helyeknek és a be nem teljesült álmoknak a szimbóluma, és ezért is szerettem volna látni, hogy hol állt. Bár nem sok látnivaló maradt így, hogy a fő attrakció eltűnt, van itt egy híres merülőhely, a Kék Lyuk, ahol folyamatosan búvárok tűnnek el és bukkannak föl. Ez tulajdonképpen egy víz alatti, tető nélküli barlang, és lentről elvileg varázslatosak a fények, meg persze a vízi élővilág is.

Wied il-Għasri

This is a narrow bay surrounded by cliffs, perfect for snorkeling and diving, cliff jumping and even for sunbathing. Since it's relatively far from larger towns and it's not easy to reach if you don't have a car (you can only travel to the nearest village with public transport and you have to walk quite a lot from there), it's almost never crowded. The rock walls provide a natural shade for most of the day, so you don't necessarily need to bring a sunshade with you. But make sure to bring enough water and food if you are planning to spend your day here as you won't find much here except one vendor selling ice cream, fruits and juices. If you want to take really beautiful photos of Wied il-Għasri, come here when the sun is at its highest point and the whole bay has a bright turquoise colour. 

Wied il-Għasri

Egy sziklafalak által közrezárt keskeny kis öböl, ami tökéletes búvárkodáshoz, a sziklákról ugráláshoz, amikor pedig a nap magasan jár, akkor napozáshoz is. Mivel a nagyobb településektől viszonylag távol helyezkedik el, és az ide jutás sem egyszerű (tömegközlekedéssel csak a legközelebbi falut lehet elérni, és innen elég sokat kell még gyalogolni), ezért nem kell nagy tömegre számítanod, ha ide készülsz. A sziklafalak a nap nagy részében természetes árnyékot biztosítanak, ételről és italról viszont érdemes gondoskodnod, ha itt szeretnéd tölteni a napot, ugyanis egy hébehóba megjelenő jégkrém-, gyümölcs- és koktélárus kivételével nem sok mindent találsz a közelben. Ha igazán szép fényképeket szeretnél készíteni az öbölről, akkor érkezz, amikor a nap a legmagasabban jár.

Tal-Mixta cave and Ramla Bay

Ramla Bay is Gozo's most popular beach so it can be quite crowded during high season. We were here in mid-October and still, we could hardly find a parking spot in the late afternoon. Fortunately this beach is accessible by public transport - for example we only could park further than the nearest bus stop. Interestingly, this is the only red sandy beach in the whole country. There are several restaurants here, and clean public toilets and showers so you can easily spend a whole day on this beach. The Tal-Mixta Cave nearby offers a breathtaking view of Ramla Bay's turquoise waters. Unfortunately there are no buses going there so for reaching the cave you'll need a car or at least a bike. The entrance is not easy to find but not impossible: you need to look for a small staircase that will take you downstairs as if you were going down to a cellar. Here you enter the relatively large cave which perfectly frames the blueness beneath it. Right next to the footpath leading to the cave we've seen several signs stating 'private property' but I think it's only forbidden to drive in or disturb the people living here in some of the houses nearby. We didn't see anyone though, the houses seemed abandoned so I don't think we disturbed anyone.

Tal-Mixta barlang és a Ramla Bay

A Ramla Bay Gozo legnépszerűbb partja, így főszezonban eléggé zsúfolt lehet. Mi októberben jártunk itt, a késő délutáni órákban, és alig találtunk parkolóhelyet már a közelben. Szerencsére ez a part tömegközlekedéssel is egyszerűen megközelíthető - mi például távolabb tudtunk leparkolni, mint a legközelebbi buszmegálló. Érdekesség még, hogy ez az ország egyetlen vörös homokos partja. Több étterem és büfé is üzemel itt, tiszták a mosdók is, szóval akár az egész napot el lehet tölteni ezen a parton. A közelben van a Tal-Mixta barlang, ahonnan lélegzetelállító kilátás nyílik a Ramla Bay türkiz vizére. Sajnos busz errefelé nem jár, így mindenképpen kocsival érdemes nekivágni, vagy legalábbis kerékpárral. A barlang bejáratát nem egyszerű megtalálni, egy kis lépcsősort kell keresned, ami levisz a föl alá, mintha egy pincébe mennél. Itt aztán hamar kitágul a tér, és egy viszonylag nagy barlangba jutsz, ami tökéletesen keretezi az alatta húzódó kékséget. A barlanghoz vezető gyalogút mellett egyébként több táblán is ki volt írva, hogy magánterület, de szerintem ez csak az autóval történő behajtásra, és az itt lévő néhány ház nyugalmának megzavarására vonatkozik, a barlangra nem. Legalábbis mi így értelmeztük, és nem is láttunk senkit a közelben, szóval nem hinném, hogy különösebben zavartunk volna bárkit is. 

Xwejni beach

This is a pretty little beach near the Xwejni salt pans. Steep, curvy rock arches are surrounding the coast and you can walk to an interesting part of the shore where the rocks are forming a wave. I was looking forward to sunbathing there and taking some really cool photos like this one. So we started to walk towards that point along the cliffs and when we reached the last bend there was a naked old man, resting one foot on a smaller rock, showing his 'thing' to the world. Nudity wouldn't even bother me, but he was standing in our way so we would have to go really close to him if we wanted to pass... Really I couldn't move from astonishment :D Viktor and I just stared at each other and left the beach without trying to reach that famous spot. We went to Marsalforn instead and had lunch in the Otter's Bistro where we chatted with the Hungarian waiter who has been living in Malta for years and had a chance to pet the restaurant's cute and fluffy cat. I can only recommend this place not only because of the cute cat, but because of the BEST goat cheese filled ravioli I've ever had. Viktor ordered a shrimp filled one with spicy tomato sauce and it was also divine. 

Xwejni beach

Ez egy elég pici, de annál érdekesebb part a Xwejni sólepárlók közelében (ami szintén megérhet egy látogatást, de nekünk sajnos kimaradt). Meredek, hajlított sziklaívek szegélyezik a partot, ahol óvatosan körbe is lehet sétálni egy egészen érdekes részhez, ami mintha egy óriási tengeri hullám lenne. Már nagyon rákészültem, hogy ott fogunk sörözgetve napozni, meg heverészek majd a bikinimben és fotózkodunk, jaj de jó lesz... el is indultunk Viktorral a sziklafal mentén, amikor is befordultunk az utolsó kanyarban, és konkrétan ott állt egy anyaszült meztelen idős bácsi, aki az egyik lábát feltámasztva egy kisebb sziklára, teljes nyugalommal lóbálta a kis micsodáját. Nem különösebben zavart volna, de gyakorlatilag az átjáróban állt, és a döbbenettől nem volt kedvem odamenni, és megkérni hogy álljon már arrébb, mert el szeretnénk itt menni :D Csak bámultunk Viktorral egymásra, és végül visszafordultunk, így esett, hogy nem lett ilyesmi képem, pedig tök jó kis hely lehet. Ebédeltünk viszont egy nagyon jót Marsalfornban, az Otter's Bistro nevű helyen, ahol jót csevegtünk az évek óta Máltán élő magyar pincérrel, és megsimiztük az étterem cuki, bundás cicáját. Ajánlom egyébként ezt az éttermet, ha erre jártok, nemcsak a cica miatt, hanem mert kb. a világ legfinomabb kecskesajtos ravioliját ettem itt. Viktor azt hiszem koktélrákos verziót rendelt, sűrű, fűszeres paradicsomszósszal, és az is isteni volt. 

San Blas Bay

San Blas Bay was a little disappointing for me, to be honest. The scenery is beautiful from the top of the path leading down to the beach. But I could have guessed that something was wrong because I couldn't say the sandy beach that I've seen on the photos taken by other travelers. When we went down to the shore there were only big rocks to sit on them and the rough sea. We had a sunny but rather windy day and we couldn't enjoy the water here. A few weeks after we returned home I looked for this place on Tripadvisor (I should have done it BEFORE we went there) only to learn that a big storm earlier this year completely rearranged this little bay and the sandy shore disappeared. I was so sad, If I knew this in advance we wouldn't have spent our time checking out this beach - especially not after that encounter with the naked man.

San Blas Bay

A San Blas Bay egy picit csalódás volt nekem. Kaktuszokkal szegélyezett meredek út vezet le ehhez a parthoz, és egyékbént nagyon festői a látvány fentről, azt el kell ismernem. De már akkor sejthettem volna, hogy valami nem okés, mert a képeken látott homokos partszakasznak nyoma sem volt. Amikor leértünk, azzal kellett szembesülnünk, hogy csak nagy sziklák vannak, amikre ülhetünk, meg az eléggé viharosan hullámzó víz, mert szeles napunk volt. Csak a hazatérésünk után kerestem rá a helyre Tripadvisoron (hiba volt nem előtte...), és onnan tudtam meg, hogy egy nagy vihar teljesen átformálta ezt az eredetileg homokos partot. A homokot kimosta, a helyét feltöltötte, így lényegében csak a sziklák maradtak. Elég szomorú voltam, ha ezt előre tudom, akkor nem töltöttük volna ezzel az időnket, főleg nem a pucér bácsis fiaskó után. 

What would I do differently if I could start over?

First of all, I would spend at least 4 days in Gozo instead of one and then we could explore the idyllic old towns and the quiet beaches at a more comfortably pace. And if I could relive that one day again when we were there, I'd start the morning at the Azure Window Memorial as we did, because it's important for me. Then I would spend a few hours in Wied il-Għasri with swimming and sunbathing. Then I would have lunch in the Otter's Bistro then have a quick visit at the Tal-Mixta Cave (because if you have a rental car it only takes about 30 minutes to squeeze it in your day), then I would go down to Ramla Bay, which is a bit touristy for sure but chilling on this red sandy shore is the perfect way to end your day.

Mit csinálnék, ha megint eljuthatnék ide?

Először is 1 nap helyett legalább 4-et szánnék Gozóra, és akkor rohanás nélkül, kényelmesen fel tudnánk fedezni az idilli óvárosokat is. Ha pedig megint újraélhetném ezt az egyetlen napot, akkor a következőt tenném: reggel ugyanúgy megnézném az Azúr Ablak helyét, mert ez fontos a kis lelkemnek, utána pedig a Wied l-Għasri öbölben úszkálnék, napoznék kicsit. Megebédelnék az Otter's Bistróban, aztán egy gyors kitérővel a Tal-Mixta barlang irányába (mert ha kocsival vagytok, kb. fél órába is simán belefér) mennék tovább a Ramla Bay-ig, ami turistás ugyan, viszont a nap befejezéséhez, és egy tengerparti pihenéshez pont tökéletes.
