Have you ever seen a frozen alpine lake?

The Gosau Lakes are even more beautiful than Lake Hallstatt in my opinion. Their pristine, untouched beauty and the surrounding mountains and lush forests will make you fall in love with them instantly. The three lakes (Vorderer and Hinterer Gosausee and the tiny Gosaulacke in the middle) are connected by a path. You can spend a whole day by the lakes since exploring all three of them will take up to 5 hours at a comfortable pace.

I wanted to see these lakes for ages, but I was extremely naive. I haven't been in the Austrian Alps in early spring before - I should have prepare for that at the beginning of April the Dachstein will be still covered in snow. The beautiful Vorderer Gosausee was completely frozen. The top of the mountains surrounding the bright, whitish blue lake were disappearing in the clouds, and almost half a meter snow covered the landscape.

I wanted to cry and laugh at the same time. But I am grateful for 2 things: on the one hand, I had never seen a frozen alpine lake before and despite my disappointment I had to admit that it was breathtaking. And on the other hand I promised myself to come back here in the summer months. Certainly not this year, and maybe not next year, but I'll be back sometime. I want to walk around the lakes, admire the mountains and meet the cute cows living there. They are roaming free in the summer around the lakes and even going down to the 'beach' enjoying the water. Next to the Hinterer Gosausee there is a small restaurant where you can try some traditional, local dishes.

If you are planning a summer trip to the Austrian Alps, Gosau is the perfect destination. After a hike you can visit the picturesque little town of Hallstatt too, but Salzburg and Golling are also close to Gosau (the waterfall of Golling is also a must, if you are in this area!)

A Gosau-tavak, főleg a Vorderer és a Hinterer Gosausee, szépség tekintetében felveszik a versenyt a Hallstatti-tóval. Szinte érintetlen, gyönyörű környezet, csipkézett hegycsúcsok, sűrű erdők veszik körbe ezt a három tavat, melyeket egy kényelmesen bejárható ösvény kapcsol össze. A tavakra érdemes egy egész napot rászánni, hiszen mindhárom tó körüljárása kényelmes tempóban akár 5 órát is igénybe vehet.

Hónapok óta álmodtam a tavakról. Ez a nap volt az, amit a leginkább vártam az utazás alatt. Meglátszik viszont, hogy nem sokszor jártam még az osztrák Alpokban kora tavasszal - máskülönben tudnom kellett volna, hogy április elején a Dachstein lábánál valószínűleg hó borít még mindent. A gyönyörű Vorderer Gosausee (miután legalább 10 méterrel csökkent a vízszintje), teljesen be volt fagyva. A jeges kékséget körbezáró hegyek csúcsa már a felhőkbe veszett, néhol pedig fél méteres hóréteg takarta a tájat.

Egyszerre kellett sírnom és nevetnem a naivitásom miatt. Két dologra viszont nagyon is jó volt ez a nap: egyrészt soha életemben nem láttam még befagyott alpesi tavat, másrészt így kénytelen voltam megígérni magamnak, hogy egyszer még visszatérek ide nyáron is. Egészen biztosan nem idén, lehet, hogy nem is jövőre, de valamikor még visszajövök. Szeretném körbejárni mindhárom tavat, csodálni a hegycsúcsokat, és meglesni az itt szabadon legelésző teheneket, akik nyaranta teljesen lemennek a tópartra. A Hinterer Gosausee partján van egy kis vendéglő is, ahol hagyományos, helyi ételeket kínálnak az utazóknak.

Ha nyári túrára indulnátok az osztrák Alpokban, Gosau tökéletes célpont: nemcsak a Gosau-tavak, hanem Hallstatt és Salzburg is nagyon közel vannak, így a mesebeli kis falu mellett akár egy nagyobb városnézés, vagy a gollingi vízesés felkeresése is belefér a programba.
